Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days people spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them using eBird. These observations help scientists better understand and protect global bird populations.
Join Wissahickon Trails for a family friendly, kid-focused event to learn about, count and celebrate birds. We’ll spend some time learning about bird identification, how to use binoculars, and take a walk around the Four Mills Preserve to count all the birds we can find.
Dress for the weather as we will be spending some time outside. The trails may be wet or muddy, so be prepared. | Bring binoculars if you have them or borrow ours if you don’t.
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada.
Accessibility Notes
The walk will be approximately 0.5 miles over fairly flat natural trails (roots and stones common) at a slow walking pace, with multiple stops for standing and listening. Access to trails requires crossing two bridges with multiple steps, additionally there is a short stepping stone crossing on the route. Restrooms are available.
