Join us for a nighttime adventure at Armentrout Preserve! Our journey will start with a short introduction to learn about these enchanting creatures before taking a walk through the meadow to catch a glimpse of their mesmerizing bioluminescence. Walking distance is approximately 0.25 miles on flat grassy areas and a natural trail. There are several benches that can be used for viewing as well.

  • Bring your own PLASTIC jar with hole-punched lid or borrow one of ours (No glass jars please).
  • Dress for the weather

  • Insect repellent is fine, but please try avoid application to hands

Flashlights (and phone screens) disrupt the fireflies and impair people's night vision. The light show is best when you:

  • Cover your flashlight with red cellophane or use a flashlight with a red light filter
  • Allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and use your flashlight only if necessary
  • Use your flashlight only when walking
  • Point your flashlight at the ground
  • Keep your phone screen off
  • Red cellophane will be available if you need it

We are happy to offer our programs at no cost to participants, but if you are able, a $10 suggested donation would be greatly appreciated. Wissahickon Trails is a local, community-supported nonprofit. Our budget depends entirely on the generosity of our supporters—individuals, foundations, and corporations.  Donate online today.
