Participate in the 124th Audubon Christmas Bird Count! Join Wissahickon Trails staff and explore Four Mills Nature Reserve to count all the winter species we see and hear.
This important, long-running wildlife census collects data across North America (and a bit of South America) to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. More information on the history of the Christmas Bird Count can be found here: https://www.audubon.org/conservation/history-christmas-bird-count
Previous years have found Winter Wren, Brown Creeper, and Barred Owl at this site.
Things to know:
- All levels of birders welcome (including beginners!)
- The walk will last approximately 1.5 to 2 hours
- Sturdy, waterproof shoes are recommended
- Bring binoculars (loaners available)
The walk will be approximately 0.5 miles over fairly flat natural trails (roots and stones common) at a slow walking pace, with multiple stops for standing and listening. Access to trails requires crossing two bridges with multiple steps, additionally two short stepping stone crossings are on the route. There is an accessible family restroom with changing table, all gender restrooms, folding chairs, and bottle filler station on the first floor of Four Mills Barn.
We are happy to offer our programs at no cost to participants, but if you are able, a $10 suggested donation would be greatly appreciated.
